Portobello is situated on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, about three miles east of Edinburgh city centre. Like nearby Leith, Portobello – sometimes referred to as Porty – was once a separate town, but has long since been absorbed into the Scottish capital. The district’s sandy beach and long promenade exert a powerful attraction on many Edinburgh people during agreeable weather.
