March 2022: Fife: Dunfermline

The day after my trip to Abbotsford, and with the weather continuing to be unusually pleasant for the time of year, I embarked on a two-centre day trip to the west of Fife, taking in both Dunfermline and Culross. This post covers my morning visit to the former.

At the time of my visit, Dunfermline was a town, despite displaying numerous references to non-existent city status (road signs indicating the way to the City Centre, a town hall marked City Chambers, and so on.) In May 2022, however, it was announced that Dunfermline would indeed become Scotland’s eighth city. The change will take effect later in 2022, after completion of the necessary formalities.

Dunfermline has multiple claims to fame, which no doubt helped its quest to make its coveted status official: it is a former capital of Scotland; it was home to several Scottish monarchs and to St Margaret of Scotland (a queen consort); it contains the historic Dunfermline Abbey and Palace; it was the birthplace of Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, and it contains his magnificent gift to the town, Pittencrieff Park.
