Thailand Contrasts (2022): Day 17: One Night in Bangkok

Although largely dedicated to relocation, today still managed to be reasonably interesting and enjoyable. Breakfast was a little different and considerably more colourful than usual as the hotel was hosting a ‘feed the monks’ event, where orange-robed Buddhist monks were provided with breakfast. After showers and packing, we ordered a car to the airport. Despite flying a low-cost carrier to Bangkok, we obtained entry to the tiny airport lounge using Priority Pass.

The 420-mile flight passed easily enough, helped by quite exceptional legroom in Row 1. Interestingly, our flight was to Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport (DMK). This used to be the city’s international airport, carrying the BKK code that was transferred to Suvarnabhumi when it opened in 2006. I instantly recognised the escalators leading down to the baggage hall – long-lost memories indeed!

We used a cab to get to the final hotel of the trip, the DoubleTree Sukhumvit. But for the food-poisoning incident in Amsterdam, this would also have been my first Thai hotel of the trip. We settled in quickly: apart from anything else, Bruce was already familiar with both the property and the neighbourhood. We took a walk to the local mall, acquiring in the process items that would later be assembled into a tasty in-room dinner. These then went into the room fridge for a bit, while we went for pre-dinner drinks.
