April 2022: Walking in the Pentland Hills: 1. Torduff and Clubbiedean Reservoirs

This introductory walk – perhaps surprisingly, my first venture into the Pentlands – began at Torphin bus terminus and ended at Currie Kirk. The former was reached at the time on Lothian Buses route 10 (though the stop is now served by route 16), while the latter is close to route 44. The initial footpath starts close to the Torphin terminus and proceeds on a curving cross-country course before making a hairpin bend to head uphill towards the private section (no unauthorised vehicles) of Torduff Road. This narrow road continues along the side of Torduff Reservoir to its southern end.

A short section then continues past Torduff Waterfall and crosses a bridge before climbing to the slightly higher elevation of my second objective, Clubbiedean Reservoir. This body of water had a more pastoral-looking setting and appeared to be more of a public attraction. The final section of my walk was on Harlaw Road and Kirkgate (both public roads), the latter making a marked descent into Currie. This former Midlothian village is now part of the City of Edinburgh council area.
