Introduction
This is the first of seven posts relating to a trip that started just a few days after Manchester & Belfast. Unlike that trip, which had originally involved travel to Denmark, this was domestic-only from outset, and was designed and booked in January 2021. Apart from the need for my friend Bruce to fly up a day earlier than originally planned due to airline schedule changes, all arrangements survived intact. The full series of posts will be as follows:
1 | Culzean Castle |
2 | Isle of Arran |
3 | Kintyre Peninsula |
4 | Isle of Islay |
5 | Isle of Jura |
6 | Cowal Peninsula & Isle of Bute |
7 | Wemyss Bay & Largs |
Our ten-day journey began on Saturday 28 August, at Glasgow Airport.
Culzean Castle
Culzean Castle (pronounced cuh-LANE) stands at a scenic coastal location in South Ayrshire, not far from the small town of Maybole. Built in the late 18th century, the castle is more a grand country house than a fortification, although in its early years a regiment of army ‘reserves’ was formed there. Culzean was formerly the home of the chief of the Scottish branch of the Kennedy clan, but the building and grounds were given by the family to the National Trust for Scotland in 1945. Both castle and estate proved to be a highly popular attraction on a sunny, summer Saturday of post-lockdown 2021.
