August 2021: London: Westminster Abbey

Accommodation

The previous night’s accommodation was at the Hilton Paddington. Bruce needed to leave for home in the morning, but I had use of the room until 4pm. This provided a good base for my final day in London, prior to my evening flight back to Edinburgh.

The Abbey

Westminster Abbey is one of the most prestigious and well known churches in the UK. Once a Benedictine monastery, it has been the coronation site of all English (and later, British) monarchs since William the Conqueror in 1066. The abbey now has the status of a Royal Peculiar within the Church of England, which means that it does not come under the jurisdiction of any bishop; instead, the Dean of Westminster is responsible directly to the monarch. The abbey is the final resting place of well over 3,000 people, many of whom were famous in fields such as music, literature and science. For all that, perhaps the most touching memorial is that of the Unknown Warrior, situated just inside the Great West Door.

Famous Names

Here are a few well known names that I spotted on my way around the abbey.
