December 2021: London: A Walk around Holborn

A few days after the USA trip, we arrived in London for a ‘Christmas Lights’ visit – any excuse! I had a few hours available on ‘arrival day’ while Bruce finished off a stint at work, and he suggested that I could try walking around nearby Holborn. Sandwiched between the City of Westminster to the west and the City of London to the east, Holborn is at the southern tip of the London Borough of Camden, in a part of that borough that is almost reminiscent of a US-style ‘panhandle’. My target area was that surrounding the large square known as Lincoln’s Inn Fields, and my walk took me in and out of all three local authority areas. I was surprised to find that, after forty-odd years of regular visits to the UK capital, this little corner of Central London was still largely virgin territory for me. Lincoln’s Inn, incidentally, is one of four organisations to which barristers in England & Wales belong.

Sir John Soane’s Museum

Sir John Soane (1753-1837) was a respected architect and collector who left his large assemblage of objects to the nation. His former home at Lincoln’s Inn Fields is now a museum for the eclectic collection.
