September 2021: Edinburgh & the Lothians: Two National Trust Properties

Gladstone’s Land, Edinburgh

Gladstone’s Land is a 17th-century tenement situated on the Lawnmarket, part of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. The National Trust for Scotland rescued the building from threatened demolition in 1934. Following a recently completed restoration, the first, second and third floors operate as a museum. The building also helps to pay for its own upkeep with a trading ice cream parlour on the ground floor and four holiday apartments on the upper levels.

Newhailes, Musselburgh

Newhailes House is a striking Palladian mansion set in a woodland estate on the outskirts of Musselburgh, the largest settlement in East Lothian council area. Formerly the home for generations of the Dalrymple family and having played a prominent role in the Scottish Enlightenment, it passed to the National Trust for Scotland in 1997. The wider estate includes a recently renovated café.
